The Waste Resources Trust is a Waiheke Island based community organisation which works to encourage creative solutions to the challenge of sustainability. Founded in 1997 the Trust was born out of Islanders frustration at the loss of its recycling scheme on amalgamation with Auckland City Council.

In its early years, the Trust focused on community education and building a team of active volunteers. Famous for their zany displays and cunning publicity stunts the Trust soon became a much loved community favourite. The Trust produces Junk to Funk Waiheke’s premier recycled fashion and arts event which involves hundreds of Islanders in a colourful and creative performance.

The Trust was very active in the development of the islands first waste management plan and from this experience formed its social enterprise company Clean Stream Waiheke Ltd. Between 2001-2009 Clean Stream ran the islands Transfer Station, achieving great success in increasing recycling rates and developing a number of exciting waste minimisation projects such as a bio-fuel plant using waste oil, a recycled timber yard, and an engineered composite board made of rubbish.
